Being a keen digital watcher, I noticed that a few minutes ago, Nigeria’s President Jonathan Gooluck Jonathan overtook Nollywood Diva, Omotola Jolade Ekehinde in the early hours of this morning by whiskers on Facebook. With this development, Nigeria is redefinning her digital status with focus on the political front.

By current standings and popularity among the over 1.5 million Nigerians President Goodluck Jonathan leads the digital race on Facebook:

President Goodluck Jonathan: 147,626

Omotola Jolade Ekeinde: 147,458

9nice (Abolore Akande): 132,443

Pastor E.A. Adeboye: 128,497…

From Search Engine Marketing perspectives, these public figures could, as they continue to ganner fans and supporters, help build a huge database of active Nigerians online which can be utilized for varied purposes. This could be a captive audience for opinion polls, and other statistics. This could make any advertiser salivate and also help to push the frontiers digital infrastucture development in the country.

Until now, Yahoo, Google, MSN are the regular resorts for search marketers from Nigeria. Babatunde Fashola, the governor of Lagos State and Goodluck Jonathan are redefining that advertisement space in the last two months, and that may be the way to go as the campaigns for 2011 elections in Nigeria draws close. From 200,000 internet users 10 years ago, Nigeria now has the largest population of internet users in Africa – 23,982,200 (about 24 million users) as of December 2009, according to the world renowned Internet World Stats (WISTATS).

On a lighter mood, the Goodluck Jonathan digital hurricane has swept off almost all of my online friends across social, political, regional and even religious divides. The few remaining ones like Kayode Ogundamisi leading an anti-Jojo corner were even compelled to positively acknowledge the growing force of the President’s Facebook fans whom he called “144,000 voiceless fans” on Saturday, but acknowledged have over taken the figures for the popular German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In the absence of electricity from the dark dungeons called Nigeria, we may never know the true positive potential of Nigerians on Facebook and the internet generally

I want to observe if the GEJ campaign can muster above the current 10% audience on Facebook, and if for example, it ganners over 1 million fans before and after the January 2011 Presidential elections. Something tells me that we should look out for Pastor Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. After the debut of GEJ on 28 May 2010, the Adeboye page on facebook has lept by a huge 40,000. Did I smell a digital or spiritual competition? The things prayer can do…

For the benefit of my readers, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is an American-based multinational electronic commerce company. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, it is America’s largest online retailer, with nearly three times the Internet sales revenue of the nearest competitor.

For many bloggers in Africa, Amazon is a ‘no-go’ area because of the Cost-Per-Action CPA advertising model. And also because Amazon is not as pragmatic as Google Inc. when it comes to payment to associates or partners participating in her advertising program. This will be a subject of a fresh topic, another time, another day.

It so happens that my wife was due for payment from Amazon last December 2009. She waited in vain for four months without the arrival of the cheque. She now initiated communications with Amazon over the “missing-in-transit” cheque. After almost six weeks of “see-saw” communications between them we now found out the cheque has been cashed by a scammer named Kaddour Chikri email chikri2002@yahoo.com through a bank (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A.) and acting through a used clothings company where he is manager: Textiles Alcudia,S.L. based in Spain. Who says it is only Nigeria that Yahoo-Yahoo Scams thrives?

The questions that Amazon has refused to answer are many:

Why did Amazon dispatched a cheque addressed to a payee in Lagos, Nigeria to Cocentaina Alicante in Spain?

Why was Amazon silent when the email chikri2002@yahoo.com used in clearing the cheque was not the same as the one they have in their associates database?

Why did Amazon refuse to raise an eyebrow when the cheque meant for an individual was cashed tnrough a company’s account?

Why did Amazon send an ‘Affidavit of Forgery’ form instead of open admission of liability and public apology?

Instead of sending my wife an affidavit of forgery form to fill and be notarized in order to help recover the stolen money, Amazon should quit this ‘bold-face’ tactics and admit liability for this corporate error as well as offer a written apology to my wife for their ‘mistake’ sending a cheque destine for Nigeria to Spain.

I will keep you informed as the matter unfolds, meanwhile I have contacted our lawyer to help look into this matter. I know that if this matter is not well managed by Amazon, it could become a thriving controversy that could catch the front page story of New York Times. Amazon is big news any day on the internet.

Strangely, we have no axe to grind with the clearing bank: Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A. (BBVA). If Amazon had not commited the foul of sending the cheque to a wrong destination, BBVA may not have been involved in the matter.

By SIMON MACKIE of GigaOm

I’m always amazed that more people don’t know the little tricks you can use to get more out of a simple Google search. Here are 10 of my favorites.

Use the “site:” operator to limit searches to a particular site. I use this one all the time, and it’s particularly handy because many site’s built-in search tools don’t return the results you’re looking for (and some sites don’t even have a search feature). If I’m looking for WWD posts about GTD, for example, I could try this search: GTD site:webworkerdaily.com.

Use Google as a spelling aid. As Rob Hacker — the WWD reader I profiled last week — pointed out, entering a word into Google is a quick way to see if you have the right spelling. If it’s incorrect, Google will suggest the correct spelling instead. Additionally, if you want to get a definition of a word, you can use the “define:” operator to return definitions from various dictionaries (for example, define: parasympathetic).

Use Google as a calculator. Google has a built-in calculator — try entering a calculation like 110 * (654/8 + 3). Yes, your computer also has a calculator, but if you spend most of your day inside a browser, typing your calculation into the browser’s search box is quicker than firing up your calculator app.

Find out what time it is anywhere in the world. This one’s really handy if you want to make sure that you’re not phoning someone in the middle of the night. Just search for “time” and then the name of the city. For example, try: time San Francisco

Get quick currency conversions. Google can also do currency conversion, for example: 100 pounds in dollars. It only has the more mainstream currencies, though — if you’re trying to see how many Peruvian nuevos soles your dollars might buy, you’ll be out of luck.

Use the OR operator. This can be useful if you’re looking at researching a topic but you’re not sure which keywords will return the information you need. It can be particularly handy in conjunction with the “site:” operator. For example, you could try this search: GTD or “getting things done” site:webworkerdaily.com

Exclude specific terms with the – operator. You can narrow your searches using this operator. For example, if you’re looking for information about American Idol but don’t want anything about Simon Cowell, you could try: “american idol” -cowell

Search for specific document types. Google can search the web for specific types of files using the “filetype:” operator. If you’re looking for PowerPoint files about GTD, for example, you could try: GTD filetype:ppt

Search within numerical ranges using the .. operator. Say, for example, you want to look for information about Olympic events that took place in the 1950’s, you could use this search: Olympics 1950..1960

Area code lookup. Need to know where a phone number is located? Google will let you know where it is, and show you a map of the area, too. For example: 415

What are your favorite Google search tricks?

By Ejiro Gegere Culled From 234 NEXT

Following last month’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) report that broadband network will facilitate the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Nigerian experts are canvassing for the quick deployment of broadband in Nigeria so that it is in tune with current developments.

The report said that in this 21st century, “the social and economic development of every country on earth will depend on broadband.”

In an interview, Lanre Ajayi, president of the Nigerian Internet Group (NIG) said “We have always been saying that broadband network is a driver of all sectors, it makes all the sectors to be more efficient and productive. From education, transportation, energy, health etc.

“So, broadband is a catalyst for all the sectors so it goes with further proof it will enhance the quick delivery of MDGs,” in terms of better service delivery to the people.

Nigeria’s challenges

Based on infrastructure challenges in Nigeria, experts say the federal government needs to make the provision of infrastructure for broadband services a priority .

“When you look at the power supply situation in the country it is terrible and that sector is a very important necessity for businesses to operate. So investing more in the power sector will also boast the Nigerian economy,” Mr. Ajayi argued.

“Broadband delivery benefits cut across all aspect of the society. This is why government should set this as a priority in order to deliver to improve the lives of Nigerians,” added Mr. Ajayi.

However, Mr. Ajayi noted, “Even with the challenges in the country, this is not to say that without broadband the MDG goals cannot be achieved, we are only saying that this would enhance it possibility of meeting the goals. Luckily, we all know that broadband deployment will soon improve in the country with the coming of Glo-1, Main One Cable and West African Cable System (WACS).”

Broadband development

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the IT and telecoms industry regulator, argues that development in the sector is the responsibility of operators as the commission has provided the enabling environment for companies to invest in broadband.

In a telephone interview, Bashir Gwandu, an executive commissioner of the commission said, “What the commission is doing now on broadband is encouraging the deployment of optic fibre cables through the Wire Nigeria initiative.

“We are also giving out additional licences to cross border for people to develop fibre cross our borders. We will also give licences to companies that will bring in undersea cables. We are trying to equally look at how people can buy bandwidth within the country that will also be effective on the transmission cost.”

Regarding the telecommunications union’s report, Mr. Gwandu said, “Of course there are so many ways to determine which broadband will improve the economy, like poverty reduction.

“In the telecom sector, when networks are deployed in a particular location that location will experience economic growth, as not only will it reduce poverty, it will improve their education, health, and provide other basic amenities. Once you have easy access to the Internet that means you can have access to books, healthcare among others.”

A few days ago my wife celebrated the landmark achievement of one million page views with her Telenovela Blog. it took her EIGHT MONTHS for that accomplishment!

For a newbie blogger, that was a great feat, particularly when seen from the blog income of $1,400.00 (one thousand, four hundred U.S. Dollars), made over the period.

Being a story site, it was not surprising that with a visitor population of 167,000+.

The lesson I learnt here is that, Philomena is trading her story-telling and writing passion for dollars. These Dollars would soon fetch her fame, if she remains on this consistent path.

CONTENT plus OPTIMIZATION plus TRAFFIC equals INCOME. That was the C.O.T.I. theory formulated and applied two years ago that has worked like a contagious fire for her.

She should look up to diversifying her income base and getting a blog to be independently hosted, instead of blogger-squatting.

She has proved that with a free hosted blog, one could generate a traffic of over 40,000 visitors and over 360,000 page views in a month.

For that same amount of traffic and page views, she could quadruple her current $500 monthly income, if she has an independently hosted blog.

Mrs Philomena Ojikutu amazes me with her growing earnings from her Telenovela Blog. I encouraged her to start a telenovela blog some seven months ago. Since then, I have been mostly off line because of my busy schedules.

A quick review of her 7-month report surprises me. Her monthly income has grown from zero to the region above $400 Dollars. Her monthly Unique visitors has grown from 200 to 33,000 while her monthly page-views has grown from 680 to over 260,000!

Though, I inspired her to take up the challenge of the gap in telenovela blogging, I never imagined that she could go this far in so short time period. Now it is my turn to be inspired with her modest accomplishment in her blogging ‘business’.

For your information, she is my wife and not just a stranger. I knew her dedication to the blog was unrivaled, what I did not know is that, she could pull such a huge crowd of fans with her talent.

Maybe the next advice I should give her is, to change the name of her blog from the gardener’s daughter (la hija del jardinero), to something more broader to encapsulate her whole niche, not just a soap opera out of the thousands in that niche.

My second advice would be to tell her to go for telenovela stories that has huge following on the internet, not just the low rated ones like Rebeca, which she is currently posting. I saw that she had started something on Betty the Ugly but stopped abruptly, may be, due to demand pressures of her readers.

Because she is a woman, she tends to be too emotionally influenced by her readers. Left to me, I would advise her to strike a good balance between what her current few readers, (I say that with all sense of responsibility, because her current 1,500 daily unique visitors can never be compared to the over monthly 120,000 new visitors that are searching for Betty the Ugly and Rebelde summaries on the net).

If she does that, she should expect her monthly earnings to quadruple to almost $2,000 Dollars!

I hope to snatch time soon again to critic or advice.
Responds To Italian Court Ruling Holding Executives Liable For Posted Videos

Culled From The Prague Post

By Matt Sucherman

In late 2006, students at a school in Turin, Italy, filmed and then uploaded a video to Google Video that showed them bullying an autistic schoolmate. The video was totally reprehensible, and we took it down within hours of being notified by the Italian police. We also worked with the local police to help identify the person responsible for uploading it, and she was subsequently sentenced to 10 months’ community service by a court in Turin, as were several other classmates who were also involved. In these rare but unpleasant cases, that’s where our involvement would normally end.

AdsSpy: 3 sites by this AdSense ID

But, in this instance, a public prosecutor in Milan decided to indict four Google employees – David Drummond, Arvind Desikan, Peter Fleischer and George Reyes (who left the company in 2008). The charges brought against them were criminal defamation and a failure to comply with the Italian privacy code. To be clear, none of the four Googlers charged had anything to do with this video. They did not appear in it, film it, upload it or review it. None of them knows the people involved or was even aware of the video’s existence until after it was removed.

Nevertheless, a judge in Milan Feb. 24 convicted three of the four defendants – Drummond, Fleischer and Reyes – for failure to comply with the Italian privacy code. All four were found not guilty of criminal defamation. In essence, this ruling means employees of hosting platforms like Google Video are criminally responsible for content that users upload. We will appeal this astonishing decision because the Google employees on trial had nothing to do with the video in question. Throughout this long process, they have displayed admirable grace and fortitude. It is outrageous that they have been subjected to a trial at all.

But we are deeply troubled by this conviction for another equally important reason. It attacks the very principles of freedom on which the Internet is built. Common sense dictates that only the person who films and uploads a video to a hosting platform could take the steps necessary to protect the privacy and obtain the consent of the people they are filming. European Union law was drafted specifically to give hosting providers a safe harbor from liability so long as they remove illegal content once they are notified of its existence. The belief, rightly in our opinion, was that a notice and take-down regime of this kind would help creativity flourish and support free speech while protecting personal privacy. If that principle is swept aside and sites like Blogger, YouTube and, indeed, every social network and any community bulletin board are held responsible for vetting every single piece of content that is uploaded to them – every piece of text, every photo, every file, every video – then the Web as we know it will cease to exist, and many of the economic, social, political and technological benefits it brings could disappear.

These are important points of principle, which is why we and our employees will vigorously appeal this decision.

- The author is vice president of Google and the deputy general counsel for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

***********************************

Firm’s predatory practices are more worrisome than the Italian invasion of privacy ruling

By Bill Cohn

While the Feb. 24 ruling by a court in Italy grabbed headlines, a back-page story that same day is of greater concern to Google and Web users. The Milan court’s conviction of three Google executives for violating the privacy of an Italian boy by allowing a video of him being bullied to be posted on its Google Video Web site in 2006 is fatally flawed and cannot stand. But the Feb. 24 announcement that EU antitrust regulators are acting on complaints made by three online firms alleging predatory business practices by the search engine king raises concerns that will not go away any time soon.

Judge Oscar Magi’s verdict of criminality flies in the face of common sense and the very essence of the Internet. It is indeed like finding the postal service guilty for delivering a letter with unlawful contents. Given that some 20 hours of video are uploaded every minute to YouTube, which Google bought for $1.65 billion in 2006, it’s impracticable for Google to prescreen content. We can, however, expect the company to have effective policies to pull harmful content – and its self-policing procedures seem to work reasonably well in the case in Italy and in general.

Italy’s ruling bears the oily fingerprints of Silvio Berlusconi, once again conflating his control of broadcast media and politics. His campaign to deny Italians broadband and place anachronistic restrictions on Internet firms makes Italy an international pariah, going against the flow of commerce and technology. Italy’s harsh cyber laws are borne of power politics not reason.

The world recognizes the unique and ubiquitous character of the Internet, and lawmakers from Brussels to Washington have acted so we all may benefit from its great potential to spread ideas and information. The EU safe harbor directive shields Internet service providers (ISPs) from liability for posted content. (Look for the EU to now force Italy’s hand by updating the decade-old law to cover user-generated content, thus reconciling conflicting rulings in France and Italy). The U.S. Congress granted ISPs immunity for ordinary defamation because the Internet merits the highest free speech protection, and subjecting ISPs to liability for all material they transmit would grind the Internet to a halt. The medium matters.

Ultimately, law and the Internet are a mismatch. Law is local, the Net global. Law is territorial, the Net virtual. Regulating Web activity presents huge headaches: Which law applies and when? Law as traditionally applied would dumb down the Net so its only content would be that which complies with law everywhere. Thus, the application of national law must give way to internationally agreed standards and protocols. Like acid rain, pandemics and nuclear arms, the Internet demands vision and cooperation for the common good. Sadly, economic woes yield protectionism not vision.

Is Google the next Microsoft? EU Competition authorities hounded Microsoft for years for using its market dominance of PC operating systems – Windows held 90 percent of that market – to leverage control over ancillary markets (Internet browsers, media players, etc.) via predatory business practices (those aimed at eliminating competition). Competition spurs innovation and progress, allowing consumers to choose the best quality products at the lowest price. Any barriers to market access hurts consumers. Even when a monopolist offers something for “free” – as Microsoft claimed when bundling its browser and media player with Windows – if its aims are to eliminate competition, then consumers will suffer.

Google today stands accused of abusing its market power in online search and advertising. (It holds some 80 percent of the market for Internet searches and ads linked to them.) It faces antitrust actions in the EU, the United States, France, Italy and Germany. The algorithm it uses to generate its search results is at the center of controversy. Online firms allege Google’s search results are biased. The CEO of Foundem, one of the EU complainants, says Google search affords an “unassailable competitive advantage for Google. Competitors across multiple markets are being crushed by this tool, and that will potentially stifle innovation across the Internet.” Competitors also claim Google uses its universal search technology to favor its own services (maps, news, YouTube, etc.). Why would it not?

Google asserts that its algorithm, the underlying formulas that determine where a site shows up in Google search results, is its trade secret, its protected intellectual property (IP). But, so long as the algorithm is secret, the firm is susceptible to charges of predatory practices. If we don’t know how its search results are generated, why trust their fairness?

Like Microsoft, made to disclose its source code so competitors could offer Windows-compatible applications, Google will likely be forced to disclose its algorithm.

IP clashes with Internet ideals like Net neutrality, open source, information access, transparency – the notion that “information wants to be free,” and that free speech on the Net is a core liberty interest of democratic societies. But IP is central to online revenues and profits. IP is contentious; it too lays claim as the engine of innovation and progress, allowing inventors to profit from their labor so they have incentive to discover and create.

Google’s real concern is loss of its IP, which drives its search dominance and profits. In January, Google threatened to pull out of China, stating concerns over human rights, censorship and privacy. But its real concern is Chinese hackers stealing its secret codes and other IP. Google’s motto “Don’t be evil” is branding, not a business plan.

The dynamic nature of cyber law and e-commerce makes predictions perilous. Nonetheless, watch for a reversal of the ridiculous liability ruling of the Milan court. It is sloppy law – the criminality finding is patently absurd – as well as bad policy. And expect Google to be in the news for years to come for alleged predatory business practices. As Microsoft knows, it’s the inevitable result of a hugely successful trailblazing business.
